看！吉里巴斯那麼小，其實島小，不過風景很好，世界日出的第一道曙光，日出的第一道曙光在那裡，風景很美，島很小，假如能平平安安，住在這樣的一個島上，倒也是一個享受。

Look at the tiny island nation of the Republic of Kiribati. Although it is very tiny, it is very beautiful Kiribati was the first country to see the dawn of the third millennium. It's a very beautiful small island nation. If the conditions had been such that people could live there safely, they'd have wonderful lives.

但是，我真的很不捨，也很擔心，看！海水一直在漲，他們的房屋蓋在海邊，水若再漲，他們還要再遷移，能夠退後的地方，才四百五十公尺，小得那樣的迷你型，以前就是這樣嗎？因為這種天災。

However, I am very concerned for the people living there. The rising sea level is threatening their way of life. The people build their houses by the shore. If the sea level rises more, they'll need to move. But there's only 450 meters (1,476 ft) at most for them to retreat because the island is so small. Was it like this before? No, it's because of global warming.

那一位總統也常常到處去演講，都會說溫室效應，其實，他們當地哪有什麼溫室效應，那麼自然的地方，他們一點都沒有造出什麼樣的環保問題，其實他們沒有。

The president of Kiribati often travels around the world telling other countries about global warming and is impact on his country. Actually, the people living there do not contribute much to global warming. They live a very simple life and do not produce a lot of greenhouse gases.

全國總數才十萬五千的人口，在這樣的一個地方，人口是不多，地方是很小，但是災難一直一直很明顯的，海水一直吞噬掉他們的陸地。

The nation's population is only around 105,000. In this small island nation that has a small population and small territory. The people are facing a crisis as the rising sea level is engulfing their land.

他們到底有沒有退路？是不是大家趕緊遷居到別地去？但是他們要遷移到哪裡去？到底是哪一個國家能容納這一群人？小國真的是無奈啊！

Where can they go to live? Can they move and take refuge in other countries? But where can they go? Is there a country that will accept and take in these people? They are truly helpless.

他們也沒有製造工業，也沒有製造什麼環保問題，這環保問題，完全都是強國、大國所製造的，都是很繁榮的國家，人口很多在享受的。

The country does not have a lot of industry and hasn't produced a lot of greenhouse gases. Environmental problems and global warming are created by the big, powerful countries. Many people living in these prosperous countries are living in comfort.

但是這種享受的人口，有沒有想到那樣的小小型、迷你的小島國？實在是他們很無辜，這位總統到處去演講，有效嗎？真的是令人覺得很心痛。

Yet, do they realize that their lifestyle is threatening the survival of people on this tiny island? The people of Kiribati are really innocent victims. So, their president goes everywhere to call attention to their plight. But has it made a difference? Their plight is truly heartbreaking.

還有，在今年的五月二日的緬甸災難，人口損失很大。

Meanwhile, the cyclone that hit Myanmar this May killed many people in that country.

其中有一位三十幾歲的年輕人，它說當初看到這樣的大災難，他駕著竹排，在水上想要去幫助救災，水面上浮著的都是屍體，用手把屍體撥開撥開。所以我們能想像這樣的景象，到底是怎樣的景象，所以緬甸的大災難，實在是驚世的大災難。

There was one man in his thirties who said that when he saw the devastation, he went on his bamboo raft to help with the disaster relief. The floodwaters were full o floating corpses and he had to push away the corpses with his hand. When can just imagine what the scene was like. This cyclone disaster in Myanmar is truly an alarming disaster.

聽到這樣的情況，我們要救濟的，到底我們能普遍性的救到嗎？很難。緬甸這個國家，那麼窮，又是那麼重的災難，很多的國際救難機構要進去，都進不去；跟我們台灣沒有邦交，當然台灣也沒辦法去。所以我就想，請馬來西亞的慈濟人，直接到緬甸去。

Having heard about such severe devastation, can we help all the victims of the disaster? It's very difficult. Myanmar is a poor country and now, it was hit by a severe disaster. In the aftermath, many countries tried to send aid but their aid was turned down. As Taiwan has no diplomatic ties with Myanmar it was not possible for Tzu Chi Taiwan to go in. So, I asked our Tzu Chi volunteers in Malaysia to go to Myanmar to help.

所以真的，這一次很感恩，馬來西亞做主導，低調的走入緬甸他們的災區，用這一分的愛，腳踏實地，放下身段的去做，這樣很低調的陪伴過來。他們當地人也來配合，高級官員他們也來看我們，他們也很感動。

I'm truly grateful to our Malaysian volunteers for taking on the relief work. In Myanmar, they conducted themselves with great humbleness. They were truly dedicated to helping the people, and did it humbly with great love, giving care for many months. The local people assisted us with our aid work. The government officials also came to see how Tzu Chi was helping their people. They were very moved by what they saw.

所以，後來接到一封緬甸發出來給我的邀請慈濟能正式進入他們的國家去幫助。政府自己要求的時候，慈濟人他們很有智慧，說：「我們這個會是來自臺灣，所以要進入你們的國家，來做大型的幫助，你就要行文給誰誰誰，我們才能真正的幫助，我們也是他叫我們來的。」真的，我也很感恩馬來西亞，對慈濟的法源非常的尊重。

Later in June, the government of Myanmar addressed a letter to me officially welcoming Tzu Chi's participation in reconstruction efforts in disaster-affected areas. When the government had turned to Tzu Chi of its own accord our Malaysian volunteers quickly told them, "Our Foundation headquarters is in Taiwan. So, for us to do a large-scale project in your country, you would need to issue a formal letter to our founder and president. She was the one who sent us to Myanmar in the first place." I am truly very grateful to our Malaysian members that they have such respect for Tzu Chi's origins.

那一天，濟緣他回來，就跟我說：「不過有一件事要跟師父致歉。」我說：「是什麼事情？」他說：「緬甸動土的時候，他們的村莊都有寫著——台灣慈濟基金會；只有在一個馬路口外面，有一條他們沒寫台灣二字。每一個地方都有寫，只有那個地方沒有寫到。」

That day, our Tzu Chi volunteer, Ji Yuan, told me, "Master, there is one thing I must apologize for." "What could that be?", I asked. He said, "At our groundbreaking ceremony, the banners in their village all displayed Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation. But there was one banner by the road where the word 'Taiwan' was missing. All the other banners included 'Taiwan', and this banner was the only exception."

濟緣他很細心，他就提出來，跟當地的官員抗議說：「這一條為什麼沒有寫上台灣二字？」對方說：「漏掉了。」他說：「不行，漏掉的也要再補上去。」

Ji Yuan had mindfully noted it and so, he brought this up to the local officials and asked them why the word 'Taiwan' was missing. Ji Yuan asked them to please correct the mistake.

但是我說：「有補上去就好了啊！」他說：「一開始時，對方沒有寫上去。」我說：「就是因為師父在，所以你們才這麼計較；師父在，所以你們做的那麼仔細。」他馬上就說：「師父不在也是一樣，因為這是法源；慈濟的法源在台灣，就算師父不在了，我們還是要有法源。」我聽了也是很感動。

I said, "They corrected it, so it's no big deal." He said, "Yes, but at first, they had left it out." I said, "It seems like a big deal to you now, only because I'm still around." He quickly replied, "No, we'll still do the same way when you're gone. Because Taiwan is where Tzu Chi originated. Even when you're no longer with us, we must never forget that." I was very moved by his words.

沒錯，靜思法脈，慈濟宗門，這就是要大家認清楚這種法源。

Indeed, I especially talk about the Jing Si Dharma lineage and Tzu Chi path because I want all Tzu Chi members to be clear on the origin and foundation of our missions.

慈濟是來自臺灣，我們身為台灣的慈濟人，我們的法源發祥地，真的大家要努力。

Since you Tzu Chi members in Taiwan are at the source or founding place of Tzu Chi all of you really need to work hard in Taiwan.

在台灣，看到那個小島，其實台灣也大不了多少，所以我們台灣的土地是傷不得啊！

Look at how small Kiribati is. Actually, Taiwan is not very big either. It cannot withstand damage and devastation.

我們不忍地球受毀傷，更不忍我們台灣這個社會，或者是台灣的土地再受毀傷。所以，我們唯有要把人人的心淨化，只有淨化人心，社會才能平和，人才不會起禍端。

Just as we can't bear for our planet to be damaged we can't bear for anything to happen to hurt our society in Taiwan or our land. It is only by purifying the heart of all people that society can have peace and harmony because only then will people not create trouble.

不過我們還更期待，人與人之間能更和諧，合心、和氣、互愛、協力。能不能讓整個社會，都有慈濟人這一股祥和之氣、祥和的氣氛，這都是我們的期待。

Within our group, let us work to have even greater unity, harmony. mutual love, and teamwork and see if that can help to spread peace and harmony all across our society. We earnestly hope for a society full of peace and harmony.

好吧！不是做不到，只要我們有心，都沒有困難。

Everyone, that's not unachievable. As long as we have the will, we can make it happen.

期待大家多用一點心，多一個委員、慈誠，所帶動多一個協力，協力再多一個協力，這樣的展轉。你們想，我們的台灣人人都是菩薩，不是不可能。

So, everyone, please be even more mindful. If each of you can inspire, just one more person to become a volunteer and each volunteer can in turn inspire more people to become a volunteer. Just think, Taiwan's entire population will be bodhisattvas. That's not an impossible goal.

所以請大家要多用心，要入法，心要入法。

So, everyone, please be mindful and truly take the Dharma into your hearts.
